Always make sure you install all available updates for your version of OS X. We highly recommend consulting with an Apple authorized technician regarding major operating system updates on older computers.

To find out which OS X software version your Mac is running, go to the upper left-hand corner of your screen, click on the Apple, then choose About This Mac — a screen will open and information about your computer, including the OS X version number, will be displayed.

IMPORTANT: Always log in as OWNER and review existing employee password security settings after new features or reports are installed. Employees will not have access to any new features and/or reports until you make the necessary changes to the employee password security options.

PLEASE NOTE: Under-the-hood stability and performance improvements are included in each new release of STX. This document covers only the features that affect your hands-on interaction with the software.

Upgrades described in this document are listed chronologically by version. Some of the new features included in this document are for use with Credit Card Processing, Online Services, and STX for iOS. You must be subscribing to Online Services and have the STX for iOS option enabled on your STX License Key in order to use the new features.

UPDATES: New features and enhancements from one update are always rolled into the next update, so that each separate update doesn’t have to be installed individually. For example, updating from STX 2.9 v262 directly to STX 3.1 v300 will contain all new features and enhancements for each version in between.

INSTALLATION: For step-by-step instruction on how to download and install STX upgrades on your server computer, workstation computers, and multi-location computers, please see the installation instructions beginning on page 18 of this document.

By checking this box within the Appointment Detail screen, the employee will be marked as having been requested. This new feature does not consider what Visit Type is selected when booking an appointment.

  • Appointments booked using the Basic Booking method will not have the Requested Employee box automatically checked when the appointment is scheduled.

  • Appointments booked using the Appointment Builder will have the Requested Employee box automatically checked if a single employee is selected from the employee popup menu.

  • Appointments booked Online: If the client requests a specific employee per service(s) being booked, the Requested Employee checkbox will automatically be checked. The Requested Employee checkbox will remain unchecked when searching for Any employee. This information is also available on the Service Log tab of the Client Card.

Booking Calendar > Value: When checking the new Value checkbox, the appointment Booking Calendar will show the value of booked appointments at the bottom of the screen. The Value of the booked appointments is determined by the appointments being displayed on the booking calendar for the following views.

Note: Employee security must be given permission to access this new feature. To set employee security permission to view the Value of booked appointments on the Booking Calendar, go to Setup: Employee: Security. The Can View Booked Value is located under Appointments: Booking Calendar Window. When left unchecked, the employee will not be able to view the value of any of the booked appointments.

Appointment Builder: The Appointment Builder shows the base Price of each service in the search results. The base Price may vary depending on the employee chosen to perform the selected service(s).

SMS Reminders: The new SMS text messaging feature, found in Setup > General > Online allows you to send appointment reminders to clients who wish to receive a reminder via text messaging and have a valid 10- digit phone number on file. • The 2 new detail sections are as follows:

    • Booked – Shows the number and value of all appointments booked within 36 hours of the mailing date by people who have READ the email. Double-click a client name from any of the detail sections to go to the clientʼs card.

    • Ticketed – Shows the number and value of all Client Visit ticket transactions associated with the appointments booked by people who have READ the email. Double-click a client name from any of the detail sections to go to the clientʼs card.

Backups > Creating and Saving a Backup: A new Backups option has been added to the STX Menu. The Backups option replaces the STXAdminTool application, previously used to create new database backups.

NOTE: You MUST remove and throw away the STXAdminTool application from the Applications folder. IF YOU ARE SUBSCRIBING TO ONLINE SERVICES, skip to Transactions > Client Visit on this page.

A new backup is automatically created on a weekly basis, as long as the STX Server computer is left on. However, a new backup can be created at any time by going to the Backups option in the STX Menu from any computer using the STX software. Saving copies of the backups can only be performed from the STX Server.

Backups > Employee Security: Employee security options have been added, allowing the employee to perform the backup functions. To enable the employee security, go to Setup: Employee: Security. The Backups security options are found under STX Menu: Backups

Data Restore: If you are currently an Online Services Subscriber, you MUST contact the Technical Support team for assistance with a data restore. They can be reached by calling 800.766.4778, or by emailing support@stxsoftware.com. Performing a data restore without assistance may cause harm to your database.

Only a Server computer with a valid license can perform a restore. Restoring will automatically roll-forward all information since the backup was taken, as long as you are restoring to the same computer where the backup was originally created. The STXRestore application is automatically installed in the Applications folder. Feel free to drag the application to place a shortcut in the Dock.

New Server Data Restore: If you are restoring the data onto a new Server computer, you will need to place a saved copy of the last backup created from the original Server computer onto the new Server computer awaiting the restore. You will need to also obtain a new STX License Key before the data restore can be completed. Please contact our Technical Support team by calling 800.766.4778, or by emailing support@stxsoftware.com.

STX Preferences > Receipts: Most Receipt options have been moved from the STX Preferences window. The remaining checkbox option Default Client Visit to Print Receipt indicates a receipt will print once the Client Visit is closed. Uncheck the box if you do not wish to print a receipt by default each time a ticket is closed. NOTE: The ticket must be paid before a receipt will print.

  • Go to Setup > General > Merchant to find additional Receipt Options…

NOTE: You must be actively subscribing to Online Services in order to email receipts to clients.

  • Click the Email Receipt button to display a sheet with an email address field…

  • If the client has an email address on file, or has a Responsible Party set, the email used by STX will appear by default.

  • If they do not have an email address, or would like it to be emailed to a different email address than whatʼs on file, the desired email address is entered here. This email address will NOT change what is stored on the client card.

  • Click Email and Close.

  • When a service package or series is 'sold', the value will appear in the Prepaids Sold amount.

  • When a service from within the package or series is redeemed, meaning the client has had the service performed, the value of the service(s) redeemed will appear in the Prepaids Redeemed amount.

  • When one or more services from within the package or series is refunded, meaning the client no longer wishes to redeem the service(s), the value of the service(s) being refunded will appear in the Prepaids Refunded amount.

STX 2.9    v250    (Required: Mac OS X 10.5 to 10.7)

iOS Application > Pole Display / Remote Receipt: An iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad can be used as a Pole Display or Remote Receipt. Simply pair your device with STX and mark the Receipt? checkbox next to the connected device, showing in the Setup: Devices section of STX. Each device marked as a receipt device will ONLY function as a receipt device. Your guests can view the ticket receipt on the device each time a ticket is changed, whether adding services, retail, gifts, performing a refund, or adding payments. This is especially helpful to California locations, which are required to display prices as items are added to a ticket, and before payment is requested. Just like a receipt printer, each computer running STX can set a preference to point to a different device.

  • Go to the STX menu and select the Preferences option.

  • Go to the Receipts tab.

  • Select the appropriate Receipt Device for the computer.

  • Check the Default Client Visit to Show Receipt box, and the receipt will automatically be displayed with the ticket, without having to click the Show/Hide Receipt button.

When between tickets, the device will automatically begin to display a slideshow of images or movies that you have placed in an album entitled STX. You must create the STX album in iPhoto, add the desired files and sync to the iDevice through iTunes. This is a great way to market to your guests.

  • Tap Pay Charge Due to adjust the amount due, or remove all together.

  • When the necessary adjustments have been made, tap Save to return to the ticket.

  • Choose the Billboard option under Reporting to view the rotating summary of employee goal achievement. The display will go full-screen. You must force-quit STX to exit the Billboard.

Reports > Clients > Client Retention by Employee: The Client Retention by Employee report allows filtering of each guest’s Initial Promotion. This is a great way to see if your promotions are producing retained guests, or if your promotions are bringing in guests who fail to return.

  • Only guests flagged with the selected promotion will be included on the report.

  • The Initial Promotion is the promotion set on the new guest’s client card to indicate how the client came to your business.

  • Clients > Client Cards > Pictures tab, to add a client image

Standing Appointments: Now you can create standing appointments using the modified appointment duration of the base appointment. Previously, when creating a standing appointment from an appointment whose duration was manually changed, either stretched or shrunk, the standing appointments created would have a duration of their original length.

Appointment Status: A new appointment Status has been added for use with Online Services. Appointment reminders sent out via Online Services now set the appointment status to Email Sent, instead of Called. This feature provides differentiation from actual phone reminders versus email reminders.

  • This status cannot be set from the appointment book, but it can be set on the Appointment Detail window if desired.

  • The Email Sent status color is a muted orange.

Client Marketing > Filters: Enhancements to the Spending on Product Lines and Spending on Manufacturers  filters have been made.

  • The Spending on Product Lines filter previously ignored the amount entered into the Amounts field. This filter now pays attention to the value entered.

  • Can Access Window

  • Can Save Changes

  • Can Access Mass Update

iOS Application > Login: Turning off notifications on an iOS device no longer affects one’s ability to log in.

iOS Application > Tickets: STX for iOS now supports examining tickets with no guest name for non-service tickets. It also supports redeeming Reward program promotions, the same as redeeming any other promotional discount on the ticket.

Reports > Transactions > Client Analysis by Employee: A section title has been changed from Revenue to Gross Sales, to indicate this report excludes refunds.

Reports > Transactions > Employee Sales Performance: This new report provides a revenue summary by employee and a breakdown of service and retail revenue. Revenue – indicates total revenue for each employee where service sales and retail sales are combined into one total.

Reporting > Billboard: By default, the Billboard now launches in a new separate Window Mode. To launch the Billboard in full screen mode, simply hold down the Option key while selecting the Billboard. Exiting full screen mode now returns you to STX without having to force quit the application. Your password will be required to exit full screen mode. After typing a password, press the Return or Enter key on your keyboard.

This allows you to double-book or book in the middle of an existing appointment when an employee may be available.

iOS Application > Tickets: New tickets can be created without having an associated appointment. The ability to create a new ticket without an associated appointment makes it possible to create retail only tickets from within STX for iOS.

Setup > General > Online: You can now choose how far in advance Reminder Emails are sent to guests. Choices include 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours or “Automatic” which is currently the same as 48 hours.

STX Login

Logging in for the first time after installing the STX update will require a password change. Changing the password (OWNER or employee) is required in order for the STX software to remain PCI Compliant for electronic credit card processing.

Whether or not you are currently processing credit cards through the STX software, the password change requirement will still exist.

Due to credit card compliancy requirements, the process of changing the password will be repeated on a regular basis.

After installing the update, launch the STX software. The Login screen will appear.

NOTE: If you are logging in using the OWNER password, be sure to remember what you are changing it to. For the protection of your STX data, do not tell anyone else what the new OWNER password is.

Immediately after logging in, either with OWNER or employee password, the Expired Password screen will appear.

Type the New Password and again to verify the new password.

Click Change Password.

Passwords must be 7 or 8 characters in length and contain a mix of letters and at least 1 non-alphabetic character. Note: You may not ever reuse an old password.

If you did not enter the same password twice, an alert will appear. Be sure to enter the exact same password in both fields.

Enter a valid Email Address or Mobile Phone Number to recover your OWNER password in the event you have forgotten what it is.
